Street Maintenance and Repairs

Annual Resurfacing Program

BDOT maintains an ongoing list of streets that need to be resurfaced. From this list we develop an annual city-wide resurfacing package. If you would like to see what streets are planned to be repaved in 2023, please click on the map link below or the individual District Resurfacing Lists. If you are a property owner and you received a resurfacing notification letter, you may use the referenced BND number on the envelope to determine the street segment related to the adjoining property. The first number in the BND number will tell you which District List to search, then use the full BND number to find the segment.  You can also click on the map link below and type in your BND number or street address into the search bar to find the corresponding project on the map.  See image below map for key.

How are Streets Chosen?

All streets wear out over time. The City keeps a list of the pavement condition for every street in Birmingham. Priority for resurfacing is determined based on street condition, location, and how it fits into the overall street network. If your street is not on the current annual resurfacing program, don’t worry – it will be in the future.

Patching, Resurfacing, and Reconstruction

Not all street repairs are the same. Different types of street damage require different types of repairs. There are three primary types of repairs:

Patching

Patching involves placing paving material (such as asphalt) onto a small area of damaged roadway. This is a suitable repair for potholes, ruts, and other small areas. The City Department of Public Works is responsible for patch repairs.

Resurfacing

When a street is damaged beyond the ability of patching to fix, then it can be resurfaced. Resurfacing includes a variety of methods to place a new pavement surface across the entire length and width of a street segment. This is the City’s principal method of routine street maintenance. BDOT works with the Department of Capital Projects to resurface dozens of streets every year.

Reconstruction

A street is much more than just the surface we drive on. Some streets are damaged beyond the ability of resurfacing to fix, because the underlying roadbed that supports the surface is damaged by water or soil problems. In these cases, the entire street must be dug up and reconstructed. BDOT works with the Department of Capital Projects to identify these locations.
