Illegal Dumping

View More In This Section

The City of Birmingham has launched the D.U.M.M.Y. campaign, where we’re targeting those who are “Dumping Ugly Mess in My Yard.” Illegal dumping is ugly, and we don’t want it in our city, which is why we have started the first phase of what will be a multi-phase initiative to:

  1. Change behavior

  2. Catch illegal dumpers

  3. Empower residents to report illegal dump sites

  4. And more

But this approach cannot be done alone. It will take everyone pitching in to help keep our city clean and prosecute those who don’t.

How to get involved

Don'tDumpInBhamUpdatedSheetonJan.17WithSummonsAndWarrant

  • We encourage community clean-up projects. And if you don’t have one, contact your Community Resource Representative at 205-297-8192.

  • We want people to let us know if they see an illegal dump site in their neighborhood. Call 311, which is open Monday – Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. During after hours, please leave a message with the location of the eyesore.

  • If you see someone illegally dumping, try to get a description of the vehicle, the vehicle tag, photos of the dumping site and as much information as possible. Then, take the evidence to the Birmingham magistrate’s office to swear out a summons or warrant for the illegal dumper. Remember to be safe as you collect evidence. The magistrate’s office is in the Birmingham Municipal Court Services Building, next to the David J. Vann Municipal Justice Center. It is located at 808 18th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203. The magistrate is available Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • If you are a contractor and you are renovating or clearing out a home, you’ll need to haul away the debris from your project. Please do not leave it on the side of the road. You’ll need to complete two forms that permit you to dump trash from your project at the New Georgia Landfill. To see the forms and the dumping rules for contractors, see below.

How you can help keep your neighborhood clean

  •  Put bulk trash and limbs out for pickup on the day your area is scheduled. If you’re unsure of your schedule, call 311 to find out when household garbage and bulk trash will be picked up on your street or check the monthly schedule at www.birminghamal.gov.

  • Did you know that you can take certain debris to the Eastern Area Landfill at 2787 Alton Road? Look below for what’s acceptable for drop off.
