BDOT Responsibilities


The City of Birmingham Department of Transportation (formerly Department of Traffic Engineering) is responsible for:

  • Planning and designing the transportation system
  • Permitting for the transportation system
  • Engineering, analyzing, and planning the signal system
  • Maintaining traffic signals
  • Maintaining street lighting
  • Maintaining road signs and markings
  • Inspecting and planning paving, sidewalks, bridges, and tunnels
  • Managing the on-street parking system throughout the city
