BRT Safety and Security

Safety for our riders is first priority. We want to ensure you that you have a safe and efficient trip to your destination on time. Our project team is in the process of developing the system’s safety and security plans in partnership with the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA), Birmingham Police Department (BPD), Birmingham Fire Department (BFD), and most importantly our neighborhood associations.

Transit Safety Awareness Tips

Below are a few tips you can use when riding transit.

  • Plan your route ahead of time.
  • Do not run to the bus. Watch your step. Wait patiently for the bus driver to open the door and allow passengers to exit.
  • Stand 2-3 feet from the bus loading platform. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop.
  • Listen for public announcements via the station’s intercom and follow directions.
  • Adhere to policies and regulations.
  • While waiting for the bus, stay on the station or platform in a well-lit. Please avoid unlit or deserted areas.
  • Do not attempt to board the bus while doors are closing.
  • If you have children, keep them close and board together.
  • Stand to one side to allow passengers to exit the bus before you board.
  • Never cross in front of or behind the bus.
  • Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings.
  • While on the bus please take your seat or if you’re standing hold onto the railings while the bus is driving.
  • Keep your feet on the floor and do not extend arms, legs or personal items into the aisle.
  • When you arrive at your station, be aware of others around you. If you feel you are being followed, go to the nearest occupied building and ask for assistance. Or click the emergency blue button on the platform.
  • Never display money or valuables in public.
  • Be respectful of your fellow commuters.
  • Never run after a bus after it has pulled away from the station.
  • If you drop something near the bus, wait until the bus has pulled away before attempting to pick it up.
