Overview:

The Design Review Committee is composed of eleven (11) members who have the authority and responsibility for determining conformance with the City’s Design Review Ordinance and with the design review standards/guidelines of established commercial revitalization districts and local historic districts, through reviewing improvements, modifications, repairs, rehabilitations, demolitions, painting or maintenance affecting the exterior and interiors visible from public ways and areas of new and existing buildings, yards, windows, signs, and vacant lots. The standards shall apply to demolition and the following categories of improvements: building design; parking design; loading and service area design; street, pedestrian walkways, and open design; landscape and planting design; and all signs and signage design including billboards and other outdoor advertising whether related or unrelated to the property. The review of interiors visible from public ways applies only to commercial revitalization districts and not to local historic districts.

Committee Members:

The members of the Committee shall consist of three (3) registered architects, one (1) registered landscape architect, two (2) practitioners from the building trades, and one (1) member who is either a registered architect, a member of the building trades, a registered civil engineer, a commercial real estate broker or developer, or an investment counselor each of whom shall have demonstrated experience in commercial rehabilitation work and shall have their primary place of business in the City of Birmingham, and four (4) members at large who are residents of the City of Birmingham.

Meeting Schedule:

The Design Review Committee meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month beginning at 7:30 a.m. Beginning on May 10, 2023, the DRC will be meeting in Conference Room 215 of Birmingham City Hall at 710 North 20th Street, Birmingham, AL 35203. Meetings will move back to the Council Chambers once the renovation is complete.
During November and December, there is a modified holiday schedule, and the committee meets only once a month.
