Volunteers to help Birmingham students complete financial aid and Birmingham Promise applications on Feb. 21

Birmingham, Alabama (Feb. 20, 2020) – Volunteers and members of the Mayor’s Office of the Division of Youth Services will visit Birmingham City Schools’ seven high schools on Friday, Feb. 21 to help students and their families complete FAFSA applications and apply for the Birmingham Promise. Volunteers will be at the schools at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is a free online application for financial aid eligibility for college. In order for students to be considered for the Birmingham Promise, they must complete their FAFSA application and apply for the Birmingham Promise by Sunday, March 1.

“Completing the FAFSA and Birmingham Promise applications are important steps for BCS students to take as they prepare to advance to college and on to a career. The city joins Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring and Birmingham City Schools in supporting students in any way possible,’’ said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. “Already, several students have completed applications. But we’d like to stress that families should not wait until the last minute to start the process. March 1 is a critical deadline that students should not miss.’’

Birmingham City Schools has said that research shows that nine out of 10 students who complete their FAFSA application will attend college that fall. Organizers hope families will take advantage of the volunteers on Friday and seek assistance with anything they encounter during the application process.
