Mayor Randall Woodfin pushes for Birmingham to buy new band uniforms for city’s 7 high schools

Mayor Randall Woodfin on Monday committed to purchasing new band uniforms for all seven Birmingham high schools.

The statement came after the Mountain Brook High School band donated their old uniforms to Woodlawn High, a school that had gone eight years without proper uniforms.

“One of the reasons I support them is because I played in the band, from the fourth grade until the eighth grade,” the mayor said in a video statement. “Bottom line, our students deserve the best when it comes to equipment and band uniforms. That’s why I am happy to support and make a recommendation to the Birmingham City Council that we, the city of Birmingham, purchase band uniforms on behalf of all seven high schools because our students deserve the best.”

Woodfin made the decision following conversations with Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Lisa Herring about the needs of high school bands.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the superintendent, the school board and anyone else that’s affiliated with our school system to make sure we continue to invest in our students,” the mayor added.
