Former boxer Evander Holyfield and Mayor Randall Woodfin to meet with senior citizens on July 27

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and former professional boxer Evander Holyfield will meet with senior citizens at the Shepherd Center, 118 – 8th St. North, on Friday, July 27, at 9 a.m. The building is next to the pool at East Lake Park.

Holyfield, an Atmore, Ala. native, is in Birmingham because he is one of 50 recipients of Positive Maturity’s Top 50 Over 50 Award, which recognizes people who’ve made a significant impact on their community. Nominations are made for awardees, and the organization received nominations for how Holyfield has reinvented himself. Holyfield will receive his award during an event tonight at The Club.

“We are honoring him for all he has accomplished in his life. Plus, he is redeveloping himself after 55,” Penny Kakoliris, Positive Maturity CEO, said.  “Positive Maturity works to change the image about growing older. You can change your whole life and start anew, if you like.’’

While at the center on Friday, Center Director June Brown will lead Holyfield and Mayor Woodfin on a tour and visit a quilting group, a line dancing group and a Bible study class. The average age of attendees is 72 to 74.

“I’m very familiar with the importance to staying active at any age. When I was younger, my grandmother stayed with my family the last nine years of her life. It was a rewarding time for me,’’ Woodfin said. “I encourage every resident to seek out and experience the wisdom and talent our seniors have to offer.’’

Positive Maturity is a nonprofit organization that offers extracurricular activities at the Shepherd Center and employment and volunteer programs. I’m glad that Mr. Holyfield will be able to join me Friday as we visit participants.’’
