City of Birmingham Partners with Nextdoor, the Private Social Network for Neighborhoods

Partnership Will Enable City Departments to Communicate with Birmingham Residents Via Private, Secure Neighborhood Websites

BIRMINGHAM, AL – June 22, 2017 – The City of Birmingham announced today a partnership with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), the private social network for neighborhoods, to improve citywide and neighbor-to-neighbor communications.

Led by Mayor Bell, this partnership with Nextdoor will enable the City of Birmingham to use Nextdoor to build stronger, safer communities with the help of Birmingham residents. The City will be able to post information such as important news, services, programs, free events, and emergency notifications to Nextdoor neighborhoods within the city. The City joins the Birmingham Police Department that partnered with Nextdoor in October 2016 to increase safety and support neighborhood watch efforts.

“Joining Nextdoor is another way to further our efforts in making Birmingham an even better place to live,” said Mayor Bell. “Giving residents more avenues to easily and effectively connect with our city, and each other, about the things that matter most to their communities will create a safer, stronger Birmingham.”

Nextdoor is an essential and well-adopted tool for Birmingham residents and more than 100Birmingham neighborhoods are connected on Nextdoor.

With Nextdoor, Birmingham residents can create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets.

Nextdoor is free for residents and the City. Each Birmingham neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website and the City will not be able to access residents’ websites, contact information, or content. All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor.

Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor website can visit www.nextdoor.com and enter their address. If residents have questions about their Nextdoor website, please visithelp.nextdoor.com.
