ALDOT Suggests Alternative Exit to Downtown

BIRMINGHAM —While generally pleased with the cooperation it received today from rush hour commuters regarding the 17th Street ramp closure, the Alabama Department of Transportation is continuing to look for ways to ease traffic congestion.

Northbound motorists are detoured to exit 125B onto 22nd Avenue with the 17th Street exit now closed. Should exit 125B become congested, ALDOT suggests following exit 126A to Carraway Boulevard.  Motorists can continue straight across Carraway Boulevard to access 6th Avenue.  Please visit www.5920bridge.com for additional routes.

“Whenever you close a major downtown artery complications can be expected,” said DeJarvis Leonard, Region Engineer. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we undertake this major endeavor.”

The 17th Street exit ramp is expected to be closed until sometime in the summer of 2018.

This work is a part of Phase II of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this construction operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For additional information please visit our project website www.5920bridge.com and for traffic alerts and updates follow us on Facebook and Twitter @5920bridge.
