Mayor William Bell will host Birmingham City School Students for a Private Screening of Movie, “I Am Not Your Negro” at Carver Theatre

Mayor William Bell will host young men at the Carver Theatre to watch the powerful documentary, “I Am Not Your Negro,” March 31st, 3:00pm-5:00pm. Following the movie, Mayor Bell will lead the young men in an open and frank discussion about how the film connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to today’s present events.

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, “Remember This House.” The book was to be a personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of his manuscript. Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material.

“We hosted young women for multiple screenings of “Hidden Figures” and we wanted to do the same with our young men. This documentary, much like “Hidden Figures,” focuses on the struggle so many had just to build a life,” said Mayor Bell, ” it touches on the works of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., through the eyes of Mr. Baldwin, as well as his personal observations. ” he continued.

“I Am Not Your Negro” is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders. The film challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

“I Am Not Your Negro” is showing at the Birmingham Historic Carver Theatre March 16-April 2, 2017.  For those interested in attending, please email tanilya.jackson@birminghamal.gov or call 205-254-2823.
