Birmingham Municipal Court Helps Over 600 Citizens Receive Drivers Licenses via RENEW Program

The Municipal Court has implemented a “Renew” Program which helps citizens obtain their driver’s license. The program helps those who have had a license suspended, failed the driver’s license test, and those who need assistance getting a license.

Coordinator Sylvia Stone said the program has been extremely successful, “Since we started the Renew program in 2014 we discovered many people do not have a valid driver’s license. Many did not know what to do to obtain one or how to clear an existing license, making it hard to get employment or apply for many services available.”

“The courts found that repeat offenders would come through with the same offense and we saw the need to develop a program to ensure they could get their license,” said Mayor William Bell. “Something as simple as a driver’s license can make a big impact on everyday life and give many a fresh start,” he continued.

Over 600 drivers licenses have been reinstated through the Municipal Court’s partnerships with municipalities in and outside of the state of Alabama.
