The City of Birmingham finance department today announced $5 Million from cost saving measures that can be used this fiscal year.
“Earlier this year, we asked the department heads to work to make their departments run more efficiently while providing city services. It worked,” said Mayor William Bell.
“Now we want to put that money right back into the neighborhoods by continuing to attack two of our biggest issues overgrown lots and abandoned homes,” he continued.
The City has demolished over 410 structures in the last 9 months, cut 10,000 blocks of right aways, cut 4,000 vacant lots along with almost 2,000 city owned lots.
“In addition, we are proposing $1 Million goes to City Schools for their reading programs. Too many of our children are reading below grade level and this is a critical and immediate need. We need 5 now to continue our momentum,” the Mayor concluded.
$2 million for weed abatement
$2 million for demolition of abandoned structures
$1 million for the Birmingham City Schools reading programs.
$5 million (total)
These items will be on the June 14th City Council agenda for a vote of the full council and in order for work to continue at the current expedited pace.
