South is the heart of the city’s shopping and nightlife. This includes the states finest malls, restaurants, theaters, nightclubs, and bars. The Wildwood Centre, Palisades Shopping Center, Colonnade, the Summit, and Brook Highland malls are major destinations. Lake Purdy, the Robert Trent Jones at Oxmoor and Highland golf courses, Vulcan Park, Sloss Furnace, City Zoo, and Botanical Gardens are all covered by the South Precinct.

The precinct covers an area of approximately 46 square miles from Inverness to Loveman Village and from Oxmoor Valley to Kingston.  It borders the North, East, and West Precincts as well as the cities of Homewood, Mt. Brook, Bessemer, and Hoover, and Jefferson and Shelby counties. Interstates 20, 59, 65, and 459; and US Highways 31 and 280 traffic runs through the South Precinct. The South Precinct has approximately 120 sworn and civilian employees. Included are neighborhood beat officers and a Burglary Task Force and a UBEV/Robbery Task Force who collaborate with the beat officers, the Detective Bureau, UAB and Homewood Police, ION Video, and CAP to prevent and solve crimes. These officers compile intelligence, conduct surveillance, serve outstanding warrants, and follow up on Part I Offenses. The South Precinct also has four HICOPP units who patrol the Loveman Village, Avondale, Kingston, and Southtown public housing units.
