Attempted Murder Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports that a suspect has been charged in connection with an attempted murder investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday,
January 6, 2013, in the 2300 Block of 34th Avenue North.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., a North Precinct officer performed a traffic stop at the incident location. Upon approaching the suspect’s vehicle, the officer attempted to have
the suspect turn off the motor of his vehicle. The suspect refused, and as the officer attempted to remove the suspect’s keys from the vehicle, the suspect began to drive off.
As the suspect drove off, the officer was pulled along the side of the suspect’s vehicle until he fell to the ground. The officer was transported to the hospital for treatment
of serious injuries sustained during the incident. The injuries are not life-threatening. The officer’s identity will not be released.
North Precinct officers along with BPD Homicide investigators obtained information that led to the identity and location of the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody
in the 3200 block of Avenue S. on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 without further incident.
The suspect has been identified as: Mark Anthony Nelson, B/M, 48, of Alabaster, Alabama. An Attempted Murder warrant with a $60,000.00 bond
has been obtained against the suspect. The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
