Arson Arrest

The Birmingham Police Department reports that a suspect has been arrested in connection with an arson investigation, but victims’ displacement has slowed the ongoing arson investigation.

At approximately 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, officers from the North Precinct responded to 1517 19th Street North to assist Birmingham Fire and Rescue on a reported apartment fire.  As BFD personnel worked to extinguish the fire, a possible suspect was identified near the apartments watching the events unfold.  Officers were able to take the suspect into custody following a foot pursuit.  Upon further investigation the fire was ruled an arson.

After the fire was extinguished, several apartments were found to have sustained heavy fire damage.  The fire caused many of the apartment residents to become displaced before officers could complete a report for the victims. Investigators need those persons who apartments were damaged by the fire to contact the Birmingham Police Department’s Burglary Unit at 205-254-1782.  Victims should call between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Additional suspect information will be released upon completion of warrant procedures.
