Sexual Assault / Burglary Arrest

The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with a sexual assault and burglary investigation.  The incident took place on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.

Officers from the South Precinct responded to the victim’s apartment to investigate a report of a burglary and assault.  Upon arrival, officers learned that a suspect entered the victim’s apartment through the second story balcony door.  Once inside the suspect sexually assaulted the victim before cutting her throat and stabbing her in the abdomen.  The victim has recovered from her injuries.

The BPD Sex Crimes Unit utilized a composite of the suspect and other sources to obtain the suspect’s identity.  The BPD Sex Crimes investigators, BPD Homicide unit, and BPD Crime Reduction Team were able to locate the suspect and take him into custody in the 3000 block of Avenue H.

The suspect has been identified as: Wyndell Hamner, B/M, 24, of Birmingham, Alabama. The following warrants were obtained against the suspect:

  • Burglary 1st Degree - $60,000.00 bond
  • Kidnapping - $60,000.00 bond
  • Rape 1st Degree - $60,000.00 bond
  • Attempted Murder - $400,000.00 bond

Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper states, “We are elated that this investigation has culminated in an arrest.” Chief Roper also states, “I applaud the members of the BPD Sex Crimes Unit in their diligent effort of working through leads to bring this suspect into custody. “

The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
