Robbery Investigation Arrest Update

The Birmingham Police Department reports that the suspect of a robbery investigation has been identified.  The robbery occurred on Monday, November 5, 2012, at the PNC Bank located at 1927 1st Avenue North.

The suspect has been identified as:  James Horton, W/M, 54, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Following the suspect’s arrest, he was transported to the Birmingham City Jail.  At Approximately 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, a Birmingham City Jail detention officer found the suspect hanging in his jail cell.  Birmingham City Jail detention officers dislodged the suspect and immediately administered CPR.  Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and rendered additional medical attention.  The suspect was breathing on his own prior to being transported to Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.  The suspect remained in care at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital until hospital staff pronounced him deceased on Saturday, November 10, 2012.

The Birmingham Police Department Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an internal investigation. In addition, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was contacted to conduct an external investigation.
