Attempted Murder Arrest

The Birmingham Police Department reports that a suspect is in custody in connection with an attempted murder and felony assault investigation.

On April 23, 2011, South Precinct officers responded to #12 1st Avenue Southwest to investigate a report of a person shot.  Officers arrived to find a 9 year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound.  The victim was transported to Children’s Hospital and received treatment for her injury. She is expected to recover from the injury.  It was later determined that the suspect was firing his weapon at another subject when the victim was struck.

During the course of the investigation, detectives gained information to help identify the suspect. The BPD Crime Reduction Team along with the U. S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Task Force located the suspect at his mother’s apartment in the 1200 block of Beacon View Parkway.  Initially the occupants of the residence refused to exit.  A short time later the suspect surrendered to officers without incident.

The suspect has been identified as: Jeffery Matthews, B/M, 32, of Birmingham, Alabama. Detectives obtained an Attempted Murder warrant against the suspect. A felony Assault warrant was also obtained against the suspect. The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.

The suspect’s mother was taken into custody for hindering prosecution. She is in the custody of the Birmingham City Jail. Her identity will be released pending completion of warrant procedures.

A photo of the first suspect may be obtained at the B.P.D. Headquarters, located at 1710 1st Avenue North.
