Attempted Murder Arrest
The Birmingham Police Department reports that a suspect is in custody in connection with an
attempted murder and felony assault investigation.
On April 23, 2011, South Precinct officers responded to
#12 1st Avenue Southwest to investigate a report of a person shot. Officers arrived to
find a 9 year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Children’s Hospital
and received treatment for her injury. She is expected to recover from the injury. It was later determined
that the suspect was firing his weapon at another subject when the victim was struck.
During the course of the investigation, detectives gained information to help identify the
suspect. The BPD Crime Reduction Team along with the U. S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Task Force located the
suspect at his mother’s apartment in the 1200 block of Beacon View Parkway. Initially the occupants of the
residence refused to exit. A short time later the suspect surrendered to officers without incident.
The suspect has been identified as: Jeffery Matthews, B/M, 32,
of Birmingham, Alabama. Detectives obtained an Attempted Murder warrant against the suspect. A felony
Assault warrant was also obtained against the suspect. The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County
The suspect’s mother was taken into custody for hindering prosecution. She is in the custody of
the Birmingham City Jail. Her identity will be released pending completion of warrant procedures.
