Officer Involved Shooting Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives are investigating a shooting incident involving a Birmingham Police Officer. The incident occurred on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at approximately 7:10 p.m. at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport located at 5900 Airport Highway.

A Birmingham Police Officer assigned to maintain traffic flow in the terminal passenger pick-up area instructed a driver that he would not be able to park his vehicle in the pick-up lane.  The driver of the vehicle left the area at a high rate of speed, but returned soon after. The driver entered the passenger pick-up area again approaching the officer as he stood in the roadway.  The interaction between the officer and driver resulted in the officer discharging his weapon at the driver’s vehicle.  The driver was struck with a non-life threatening wound to the face. Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the driver to UAB Hospital for treatment.

ABI will conduct the shooting investigation. The Birmingham Police Department Internal Affairs Unit will also conduct an investigation.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
