VIPS (Volunteers in Police Services)
The VIPS Program came about after the 911 tragedy. VIPS is funded by
of Justice and administered by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The VIPS Program was launched
nationally in the Spring of
2002 after the "911 Tragedy". The purpose of the program is to free law
enforcement professionals for frontline duty. This is done by allowing volunteers to help with some of the administrative duties.
The Birmingham Police Department has had VIPS volunteers in many different units when our VIPS Program first started. Some of BPD's
first volunteers worked mainly in the Detective Bureau. Now, the majority of our volunteers work in the Jail. These volunteers
perform various jobs such as: G.E.D. tutoring, Bible Study Groups, AA Meetings and Computer Lit Groups. To become a VIPS volunteer,
you must be at least 19 years old, pass a background check and commit to at least 4

Senior Volunteer Paid Program
The Senior Volunteer Paid Program is for seniors who are interested in on the job employment training. The requirements
for the program are as follows:
- Age 55 or over
- Live in Jefferson County
- Not currently employed
- Limited income
- Have to continue to search for a job

The Birmingham Police Department in partnership with area high schools and colleges will
be offering for credit only Internships for students pursuing a career in Law Enforcement or a related field.
Students will have the opportunity to work in various areas within the department such as Forensics and Investigation. Interns shall be selected by the school in which they are attending and will be subjected to a background investigation.
