Karin Hopkins, Senior Public Information Officer

Karin Hopkins has served as Senior Public Information Officer for the Birmingham City Council since March 2004. She is responsible for the flow of information from the City Council to various publics including the news media.

She develops and disseminates information concerning Council actions, initiatives, projects and issue oriented positions. Other duties include copy writing and graphic design of Council newsletters and other print materials, video production to support Council projects, maintenance of Council’s presence on the City of Birmingham Web site and management of contracted vendors.

She is a veteran communications professional who began her professional life as a television news anchor/reporter/producer working at television stations in several markets across the country. After a successful tenure in the news business, she changed careers and established herself as a public relations and marketing executive.

During her public relations tenure, Karin demonstrated impressive versatility by working with a diverse client roster included large corporations, major institutions and organizations as well as start-up and emerging companies, tourism related projects, festivals, trade shows and conferences. As Senior Communications Manager at a public relations company which she co-owned, she was responsible for internal communications including proposal writing and presentations. She was also responsible for personnel management, budgeting, planning and programming.

Her skills in the areas of public relations, media relations and special events earned numerous awards and secured a reputation for excellence among clients as well as peers in the public relations industry.

Her previous careers in media and public relations were ideal training for the position she holds today as City Council Senior Public Information Officer.
