The Training/Safety Division is responsible for providing training for all of the knowledge and skills utilized by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service firefighters.
This includes Fireground Tactics, Hazardous Materials Response, High Angle/Confined Space Rescue, Hydraulics, Ladder Operations, and continuing education for all levels of EMT personnel. The department's firefighter recruit schools are conducted by the training staff and station fire officers.
The Safety Office is responsible for investigation of on-duty accidents and injuries, coordination of the Annual Fit Check and Job Task evaluations and liaison with the City's Medical Services Unit. The inspection and maintenance of all Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is conducted by personnel certified in their repair.
The Safety Staff also serve as Incident Safety Officers at multi-alarm or complex incident scenes. The inspection and replacement of the firefighters' personal protective equipment is provided by our safety officers.
