Johnathan F. Austin
Chairman Public Safety & Technology
The Honorable Councilor Johnathan F. Austin will serve the constituents of District 5 from2009 - 2013. As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, Councilor Austin is entrusted with overall wellbeing of the community. A member of the Park and Recreation and Cultural Arts Committee and the Committee of the Whole, he works on initiatives that unite Birmingham.
In December 2008, the Birmingham City Council looked to Austin to represent the residents of District 5 during an unexpired term. Upon appointment he became the youngest ever appointed Birmingham City Councilor.
Then, in a feat only few can claim, the appointed Councilor sought the District 5 seat through the electoral process and won. Austin defied the odds, including the challenges of veteran politicians to continue serving as Council representative.
Dubbed a "forward-thinker", Councilor Austin works to make the city more technologically friendly, open more bike lanes, improve personal health, enhance the environment and creates jobs.
The Birmingham native uses his technological training experience for both social and business entrepreneurship. He has served as Executive Director for The Center for Urban Missions, a community based organization that addresses the needs of underprivileged children and adults. He was Chief Operating Officer of The New City Center, another program for the underserved in Birmingham. Currently, he is President and Chief Executive Officer of Fitz, a technology consulting firm.
Councilor Austin is the proud parent of an adopted dog, Zeus.
