Notice Under The Americans With Disabilities Act

In accordance with the requirements of title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the City of Birmingham will not discriminate against individuals with disabilities on the basis of disabilities in City services, programs, or activities.

The Office of Americans with Disabilities Compliance is here to assist with the following:

  • Communication – Upon request the City will provide appropriate aides and services leading to effective communication for qualified persons with disabilities so they can participate equally in the City’s programs, services and activities, including qualified sign language interpreters, documents in Braille, large print and other ways of making information available to persons with speech, hearing or vision impairments. Persons needing communications devices should make their need(s) known to this department or the department for which services are sought. Please allow adequate time for the City to make accommodations for your request.
Note: The City does not provide assistive devices for personal use, only to access City services, activities and programs offered by the City of Birmingham.
  • Program Modifications – The City will make reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all City services, activities and programs. For example individuals with service animals are welcomed in City offices even where pets are generally prohibited. If you are planning to attend an event and require special seating arrangements or other assistive devices please let the Office of ADA or the event center know in advance. Because all activity centers may not offer accessible programs you may be directed to those centers where we can accommodate your needs at another facility or make program modifications at the site to facilitate access and participation.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication to participate in a City program, service or activity should contact the Office of ADA Compliance as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.

Note: The City is not required to make modifications to programs or activities that would fundamentally alter the nature of the program or services or impose an undue financial or administrative burden. The City will not place a surcharge on a particular individual with a disability or any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing auxiliary aids/services or reasonable modifications of policy, such as retrieving items from locations that are open to the public but are not accessible to persons who use wheelchairs.

  • Employment - The City is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of disability in its hiring or employment practices and complies with all regulations promulgated by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity. All applications for employment may be accessed through the Jefferson County Personnel Board.

The Advisory Committee of the Mayor's Office on Americans with Disabilities meets every second Friday at 10:00 am at city hall and is open to the public. If you desire to make an appearance before this committee please contact the ADA Office. The Grievance Committee is composed of the ADA Advisory Committee of the whole.Complaints that a City program, service or activity is not accessible to persons with disabilities should be directed to:
