Mayor Larry Langford

Larry P. Langford is the 30th Mayor of the City of Birmingham. Born on March 17, 1948 in Birmingham, Alabama, Mayor Langford is truly a native son. From humble beginnings as a resident of the Loveman Village Public Housing complex in Titusville, Langford graduated from Parker High School and later earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Mayor Langford went on to serve in the United States Air Force. After returning to Birmingham, he became one of the region’s first African-American television reporters in the 1970s, winning several awards for his investigative reporting at then-WBRC/Channel 6 (today, Fox6).

Mayor Langford’s political career started as a Birmingham City Councilor in 1977. In 1988, he was elected mayor of the City of Fairfield (a suburb of Birmingham) where he served until 2000. Langford was elected to the Jefferson County Commission in June, 2002. His fellow commissioners later elected him president. Langford was re-elected for a second term as commissioner in 2006. During his terms as commissioner, Langford served on the boards of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Civic Center (BJCC), the Metropolitan Development Board, Jefferson County Workforce Investment Board, the JCCEO board and as a part of the elite Chairman’s Circle of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, Mayor Langford was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree from Miles College and has completed advanced studies at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.

On October 9, 2007, Larry P. Langford was elected Mayor of the City of Birmingham with 50.3 % of the popular vote - a feat many area mathematicians proffered in the days following the election as a “statistical impossibility.” In his first few days in office, Langford launched the “Citizens First” initiative. The “23 in 23” plan – an unprecedented endeavor to clean up the city’s 23 communities in 23 days -- launched Monday, Nov. 26th to rave reviews.

Mayor Langford is married to the Mrs. Melva Ferguson Langford. Together, they have one son and two grandsons.
