Learn more about City of Birmingham Capital Projects

The Freedom Center Project has the potential to be a transformative project for the Civil Rights District and surrounding neighborhoods. The City is pursuing Federal Monument status via the National Parks Service and United States Department of Interior. Both the Director of the National Park Service and the Secretary of the United States Department of Interior have visited Birmingham and specifically, the AG Gaston and the Civil Rights District. We are working on a timeline for this aspect of the project based on their recommendations. Neighborhoods surrounding the Civil Rights District would be designated as “gateway” communities. Both designations allow the City to seek federal funding for the entire Civil Rights District footprint and those communities.
